Education
Grant County has two public consolidated school districts, Silver and Cobre. They provide comprehensive public education at locations throughout Grant County. The schools offer a blend of education and community activities, and are frequently counted among the best-performing schools in the state.
Silver schools combine a distributed elementary school system with centralized middle schools and high schools. Both Silver and Cobre Consolidated offer support for a range of students' potentials, including opportunities in high school for concurrent enrollment at Western New Mexico University for qualifying students. Within the Silver Consolidated system, a new, inquiry-based charter high school will open its doors in Fall, 2005.
Optional and after-school activities include sports and band at the middle and high schools.
As an alternative, there is a homeschooling community that networks together to pool resources. There are approximately 42 families homeschooling in the Grant County area; half of those families belong to the Christian Home Educators Support System (CHESS). (Source: Informal Telephone Survey)

Western New Mexico University is a four-year, state-supported campus offering a wide variety of curriculums. WNMU is the only university in New Mexico to have received the state’s highest recognition for quality, the 2003 Zia Award.
